Description
Say goodbye to boredom. Perhaps nothing thrills like the cold tickle of inquisitive tentacles. Imagine finishing your meal and finding a giant octopus behind your calamari! This traditional blue-willow-inspired design can be found on the seventh porcelain plate in the Calamityware collection.

Designed by Don Moyer and initially launched as his 12th Kickstarter project in 2015.
Dimensions & More Info
  • 10.5” diameter (26.5 cm)
  • Rich blue images on white porcelain.
  • Produced using the in-glaze decoration process. That means the image is slightly melted into the surface like the fine porcelain you see in museums.
  • Remember, all Calamityware plate designs are different—different borders, different images, and sometimes slightly different blues because the plates were fired at different times. They will look good together on your table or wall, but they won't be identical.
  • Made at the award-winning Kristoff porcelain workshop in Poland.
Care
  • Food safe.
  • Microwave safe.
  • Dishwasher safe.
  • Porcelain is both delicate and durable. We think you’ll enjoy Don’s blog about caring for your new treasures.

Where it's made

These porcelain pieces were fired at the Kristoff workshop in Valbrich, Poland, one of the oldest and grandest porcelain workshops in the world. Kristoff began making porcelain in 1831 and its work can be found in museums and in the palaces of royalty. Our porcelain designs are in-glaze, which means slightly melted into the surface of the piece, to ensure a beautiful crisp image for years to come. Photo by Porcelana Krzysztof Sp. z o.o.

One of the best things...

...about this series is serving dinner on them to unsuspecting houseguests who always start off wondering why my sense of style has suddenly veered to the classics, before taking a closer look and realizing the doom and dismay that lies before them (and no, that's not a commentary on my cooking :D).

Pretty enough to display, sturdy enough for constant use, these are terrific.

The Long Arm of the Plate

They say these plates are microwave and dishwasher safe but I could only tell you they're wall safe. I have all my hanging up! Tentacles is a welcome addition.

I love Tentacles!

Octopuses are pretty much my favorite sea creature and it is a pleasure to have one on a plate. Especially when the plate is as beautiful as this one. The quality of the workmanship is amazing. I've put my plate through the dishwasher quite a few times and it still looks like new.

Don, Master of Calamities

1800s Blue Willow meets 1940s Sci Fi. What a surprise that fisherman is about to receive! Who can resist these quirky plates? Not me. Another happy customer here.

Look out!

I like hugs, but i'm not certain that I want to be ensnared in these tentacles! I have purchased plates 4, 5, 6, and 7 and I love every one of them! They are durable, attractive, and very clever! Keep up the good work, Don!

Such Detail, So Wow

Spoiler alert - Don't read this review if you like hunting down all the tiny details in the plates...

We've been collecting the Calamityware plates since Plate 1. My 4yo daughter is always excited when a new plate comes but this one is her absolute favorite! She insists on using it with every meal. She loves looking for all the little details in the border pattern ("Look! It's the little fat spaceship! I found the bus! There's a little kitty face!"...) and we love finding them with her.

Because this plate is so detailed, we've gone back and looked over all the other plates to try and find little details that we may have missed. We've found a few but she still won't give up this plate!

Fantastic!

Growing up with souvenir blue and white transfer ware plates supplementing vintage Wedgewood, Calamity Ware always brings smiles and laughs to the table. The octopus adds to the adventure and brings out the diver in each of us. Oh that they would be so visible underwater!

The Best Plate

I love this plate. It's just the best. The octopus design is fantastic-- the depth of the octopus is specifically striking. The quality of the plate is super-- I use it for everyday eating (whenever I need a little more tentacle in my life) and run it through the dishwasher, and it's not even phased.

Totally fabulous

I have a set of 8 of the dinner plates (I wanted all of them but, sorrowfully, had to limit myself). I love love love this dinnerware, and get a total kick out of having friends over for dinner and having them think they’re eating off traditional plates, and then having them look closely! That said, when one of the plates gets dropped and breaks (as happened with the tentacles plate), it’s not even a question that I will replace it immediately! These are good sturdy plates and still look good with pretty much constant use,
