Description

The Vexations designs are a whimsical celebration of the dominant fact of modern life—that each new day seems to bring some fresh exasperation.

Each plate includes designs from Don Moyer's sketchbook featuring different calamities: Grouchy Mammoths, Romping Dinosaurs, Hairy Giants, and Angry Asteroids.

Sold only in sets of four. Each set contains four different small porcelain plates to go with your Calamityware dinnerware.

Note: the Vexations plates are a teensy bit smaller than our previous small plates (Ants, Now What?). Click here to find out more about the differences.

Dimensions & More Info
  • 8” diameter (20.3 cm)
  • Rich blue images on white porcelain.
  • Designed by Don Moyer and initially launched as his 66th Kickstarter project in 2023.
  • Produced using the in-glaze decoration process. That means the image is slightly melted into the surface like the fine porcelain you see in museums.
  • Remember, each plate design is different—four different borders and images. The blues in this set of small plates will match each other. And, although they will look good with your other Calamityware dinner plates, the blues may be slightly different from your other Calamityware pieces because they were fired at different times.
  • Made at the award-winning Cmielow porcelain workshop in Poland.
  • The Vexations plates are 0.25" (0.6 cm) smaller in diameter than our previous small plates (Ants, Now What?). The size difference won't be obvious on the table but you might notice the variation when you stack them or pull out a ruler.
Use & Care

Use:

  • The small plates will accommodate sandwiches, light meals, salads, snacks, and all manner of desserts.

Care:

  • Food safe.
  • Microwave safe.
  • Dishwasher safe.
  • Porcelain is both delicate and durable. We think you’ll enjoy Don’s blog about caring for your new treasures.

These porcelain pieces are fired in Poland at one of the oldest and most accomplished porcelain workshops in the world. The Cmielow team traces their start to 1790. Work from these craftspeople can be found in museums and in the palaces of royalty. Our porcelain designs are in-glaze, which means slightly melted into the surface of the piece, to ensure a beautiful crisp image for years to come.

Wonderful, fun plates for daily use

I love these little plates. They are the perfect size for so many things: a snack, a light dinner, a dessert. They remind me so much of my grandparents "fancy" plates but these are so much more fun. We love eating off of them every day. They are also very easy to clean.

Great set of dishes!

I purchased these through a Kickstarter campaign and as soon as they came in, I had to purchase more. Then, once those were in, I talked my husband into replacing all of our dishware with Calamityware! The pieces are sturdy, interesting, and always bring about conversation. If you're on the fence about purchasing, I can tell you right now that you should get these. Now I'm off to say the same thing about the shallow bowls, which are also amazing!

Cookies!

How do you calm Big Foot, asteroids and prehistoric critters? Give ‘em cookies! That’s my excuse, anyway. Nice size, great quality as always. Glad I added these to our collection.

A Gift

I got these for my daughter, Roxanna’s birthday. I shipped them to her in California but did not see them myself as I am in Maryland. But I liked the picture of the meteor, as I used to work on space debris and reentry risks at the Air Foce Space and Missile Systems Center. She liked the dishes very much. Clever plates.

Beautiful, useful, strong

I bought two sets of four of these lovely small plates to go with my Calamityware dinner plates. Gradually building a set!! What I like about all of these dishes is they are sturdy, beautiful, and even look delicate. But they can be used as everyday plates, and they add a special something to every meal or snack. Love the imagination and art that went into each one of these!

The joy of vexations

A friend gave us a set of cups for Christmas, and we felt we needed MORE Calamityware in our day, so we got 4 of these little plates. They make our real vexations pale and bring us joy every day with the joy of carbs: English muffins, bagels, cookies, cake, etc. Classy (high quality) and vaguely subversive. We enjoy guests ‘discovering’ their uniqueness on their own. I think of them as fun, accent pieces but sense the start of an addiction…
