Using the classic technology of an extra-wide jacquard loom, our friends at Piscatextil in Portugal, painstakingly weave our Creature Comfort pattern into cotton throws, bedspreads, and shams. Everyone loves the substantial weight of these textiles and the delightful texture that results from the interaction of the dark and light threads.
Calamityware is a tiny, five-person, one-dog company headquartered in Pittsburgh. We love bringing the darkly whimsical view of our founder and chief monster-maker, Don Moyer, to life. Our products are high quality, meticulously manufactured items that make wonderful gifts for you and other weird-adjacent people in your life. Our goal is to make you smile.
The bedspread is an excellent weight. King size is actually king size. The design even looks good with our mostly navy/dark blue bedroom decor.
MOST IMPORTANTLY, our resident feline overlords approve of the texture and sleep-ability of the bed surface, and *their claws do not go through* the bedspread when the warm furniture is sleeping underneath.
My sister surprised me with this for my birthday and it just arrived. I actually own the throw, so I can positively say these new blankets are of equal amazing quality. This blankets are so well made, so lovely to feel and use, and so washable, that when it first arrived and I thought I had *two throws*, I was over the moon. Finding out it’s big enough to cover my whole bed? Whole new levels of excitement. She joined the kickstarter, so I didn’t even know this size *existed* yet!
Hands down the best bang for your buck blanket I’ve ever seen.
I’m beyond happy with this set. I had the throw blanket but wanted a full sized blanket for my bed with the shams. These are so very well made. These are the kind of quality I have seen in $1,000+ USD quilts. I highly recommend this product!!!! And of course, it has Don’s brilliance meticulously stitched throughout!!!
So pleased I got into the kickstarter for the queen size bedspread and shams. OMG! Like the throw (you should sense a theme, here), this is soft and, indeed, comforting! I received it yesterday, put it on the bed last night, and it looks good and sleeps terrific!
I have had the Calamityware woven throw for some time now and have been very happy with it! I am a serious fiber hobbyist and know quality when I encounter it - and the throw is mighty fine! It is heavier than one would expect, not in a warmth manner but in actual weight. It's almost like a very light weighted blanket. Unlike many doubleweave/jacquard textiles, there aren't long floats to get caught on clothing or pet claws. The individual cotton threads used to weave are not thick, which makes the surface both smooth and dimensional. (I have had double side throws in the past made by other manufacturers that use heavy gauge yarns and often have long floats - or unanchored threads - which can catch on things and ruin the weave).
When I learned that bedspreads were planned, I was so excited! Sadly, I missed the Kickstarter (overzealous spam filter to blame) but obsessively checked the site and was able to score a king bedspread and set of shams! I am using them now, and couldn't be happier. The throw is a bit much WITH the bedspread to my eye, so my oldest son happily laid claim to the throw, and everyone is happy.
This is an excellent product. Knowing what I do about textile production, I can say without reservation that it is a bargain! Do not hesitate if you are on the fence. Totally a great value and lovely and fun to look at.
I absolutely love it. High quality and the perfect weight. Extra bonus that it's double sided and that the colors are reversed when turned over. So nice!
Thank you for making shams a separate item.
I find them annoying and when they are included they immediately go into the donation box.
I wish I could do the same with other makers.
Being the happy owner of other Calamityware items, I knew the quality of this bedspread would be very good and I was not disappointed. Like another said, the King size is very generous! I love the weight of this blanket and I find it pairs really well with jersey sheets. I love going to bed every night with the bats and bugs and weird creatures.
Love everything about this spread: The weight, the design, the coverage. It also provides a nice contrast with traditional, vintage quilts & oriental rugs.
