Monumental Calamityware News

Dear friends,

We want to share some important news about Calamityware — and we want to do it clearly, honestly, and without drama.

After many wonderful years, the core Calamityware team — Don, Jack, and Lynnette — is beginning a gradual retirement. This isn’t a sudden change, and it isn’t an ending. It’s a careful transition.

On July 1st, we’ll be shifting ownership of the business to a group that knows Calamityware exceptionally well: the partners at Maryland China, who have been making all of our porcelain products for more than a decade.

If you’ve owned a Calamityware mug, plate, or bowl, you already know their work. They understand the details, the quality standards, the humor, and the slightly unhinged spirit of this brand — because they’ve helped bring it to life for years. They care deeply about Calamityware and are committed to building on the foundation we’ve created, not reinventing it.

Here’s what will not change:

  • The distinctive Calamityware look and tone
  • The commitment to quality materials and manufacturing
  • The love of odd, intricate, and slightly catastrophic designs
  • The care given to customers and the community

And here’s what will change:

  • Don, Lynnette, Jack, and Nina will no longer be part of the team
  • Maryland China will take over leadership of production and the business itself
  • Calamityware will continue forward without us at the helm

During this transition, we’ll be sharing everything we’ve learned with our friends at Maryland China — what’s worked, what hasn’t, and what makes Calamityware feel like Calamityware. We want this next chapter to succeed, and we’ll be supporting it every step of the way.

This brand has always been more than a business to us. It’s been a long, strange, joyful experiment — and we’re incredibly proud of what it’s become, and of the people who will carry it forward.

Thank you for being part of this story. We’re excited to see where it goes next.

With gratitude,
Don, Lynnette, Jack, and Nina

I’m sad you’re leaving, but thankful you started Calamityware in the first place! This has been the most creative and fun company I’ve ever purchased from! Fun designs, excellent quality……what more could I ask for? Calamityware will live on, but you all will be missed 💕

Congratulations to you all! I’ve loved collecting and giving your wonderful pieces through the years. Your collective senses of humor seeps through each coffee mug to make the brew taste better and start each day with a smile! All the best to each of you!

Selfishly, I’m disappointed. But great things never last forever. Thanks for all the wonderful porcelain

Finally, Calamityware will be in competent hands! Wait, on second thought, your jaded viewpoint, imagination, and sense of humor won’t be there. Oops competency is not all it’s cracked up to be. You will be sorely missed.

I guess you all had to retire eventually—but it makes me sad. I will miss you!
I just need to know: Will Buffy be staying on at Calamityware?

Love your stuff. Have lots. As a retiree I get it. Time is a precious commodity. Now you’ll have more of it. Spend it doing things you love with those you love. Your products seem like you were already doing that- one reason I have so much of them. Congrats. Good luck and thank you.

How could you leave me?!!! Why am I still here anyway? People always ask when I think I’ll retire and I look at them like a deer in the headlights. I have so much Calamityware gear in my life because it smiles me. I can only imagine new horizons are in order for you all. Even Jack. Robot, too. I hope that Inside Room 47 (I have one, too, because of course I need that marching band bass drum and that Nat Parsons painting that I can’t figure out how to hang in the house…) continues with fun postings of arts and doodles because arts and doodles make me happy. And it’s all about me. Except when it isn’t. Congratulations on running a stunning business for this long. Alla you. Don, Lynette, Jack and Nina and I know there were some others in and out, plus the dog, which counts for a lot because dogs.

Hi Don & Lynnette, Happy Retirement!, but so sorry to see you go. I have been a devoted fan & customer for many years. Decades? How will this affect the current Kickstarter project? The Hungry Dragon Bowls. Are we still on schedule? Thanks, Ruth

Gosh! Gang! All the hugs 🤗 to all of youz! Surprised how much your moving-on news hits me in the feels. Definitely your wonderfully weird & convivial business quickly became like family. I’ve cherished not just your products but also your e-mails, whose friendly, kooky tone invariably makes me giggle in a world where not much else does (though Things Could Be Worse). I am espesh pleased that I’ll be receiving what has proven to be Don’s final vision for your company—his Ramen Bowls, once those are complete.

I hadn’t known you work with a Maryland company to produce your porcelain. As a MD resident, I admit that as your business changes hands, I’m comforted to feel a continuing “home-grown” connection to your work.

Blessings to you all for all your future endeavors!

Dear Beloved Gang of Lovecraftian and Such Oddities – you are literally my morning cup of coffee, a whimsical reminder that after Bible and prayer, it is good to declare on a daily basis, these days, that Things Could Be Worse. Enjoy your next chapter, Rebecca

Dear Friends,

Congratulations, first, on the most clickable email button ever! “Yell At Us Here” is great. I might steal that.

Second, congratulations on building a company that is beautiful and sustainable enough to live beyond you. I love every Calamityware product I have (and am so grateful for the First Unicorn print on my office wall!). You’ve truly built something special, loaded with the surprise and delight that keep these days interesting. Thank you for serving beauty and joy so well.

Enjoy the peace, quiet, flexibility, and napping in your future!

God bless,
Audra

As a long time (some might say obsessive) collector of Calamityware, I’m thrilled for you all! I have so loved your ideas and products from the first robot/flying monkey to the still waiting for ramen bowls. You have brightened up our home and I am grateful for you!
Be well, stay safe, watch out for extraterrestrial signs that advertise “Eat Here”

You all have been a joy to work with—that’s my only concern for future purchase interactions. How exciting that your little project is valued and will continue! Best to all and thanks for what you started and for what those of us who knew you “when” will pass on. Yup: things could be worse!

NOOOOO!
Seriously, I hope you all enjoy your next chapters. You are all awesome, and I will miss you all! It won’t be the same without you.

We will think of you whenever we take a shower, have our morning coffee, and wear our favorite shirts. Sigh.
Best, Leslie

Don, et al.

I bought my first Calamityware pieces close to 15 years ago, through Kickstarter… a set of 12 sea monster plates. That was followed by the small plates, the shallow bowls, coffee mugs, and more. I introduced my now-wife to it and she’s become, perhaps, a bigger fan than me! I’ve given plenty of Calamityware gifts. I even followed your blog and [hesitantly] tried Holy Crap!, based on the recommendation given there — in spite of the suspiciously ambiguous “organic material” ingredient.

Your creations have meant a lot to me and provided years of inspiration to myself and those around me. Much like a band that breaks up after making some great music, I can’t be mad that you’re retiring… I appreciate your work and I thank you for it.

Best of luck! Enjoy your time and know you’ve made a lot of people happy.
Cheers!

OMG! While so many are going through significant transition, we understand. Thank you for creating this delightful brand. I hope that Don might create some more drawings for new products? Freelance? It’s his vision of course that is at the heart of this brand. That said, best of luck for all of you, enjoy your lives! Thanks again, we will continue to watch for new things and enjoy our mugs and bowls that make us smile every time we use them.

My dear Calamityware friends, I barely read my emails but when I saw “Momentous News (and how it will affect you)” from people I trust like you, I knew I had to open the email. Still processing the news, but I want to take the momentous occasion to thank you for making my life better for the past several years, including helping keep me sane during the covid pandemic. I drink my coffee out of a Calamityware mug. I have sent Calamityware mugs all over the country so that my mom, dad, brother, sister-in-law, and aunties drink their coffee out of Calamityware mugs too. I have your Sea Monster shower curtain in my bathroom. I send Calamityware holiday cards to the people I like extra-much. I keep my keys and other pocket cruft in a Troll Bowl. And of course I’m Exorcising Demons whenever I exercise! Thank you for bringing your ideas to life in such a tangible way to that we can share in them so fully. Break a leg (not a mug), Maryland China, and you leave with my best-ever wishes, Don, Jack, Lynnette, Nina, Buffy, and the new puppy. Farewell but not good-bye. – Genevieve

Can they be fans of ravens, like the bird, too? I feel like introducing some Corvid themed stuff might be a good trade off. I will miss the former owners but looking forward to learning about the new ones!

Hello Calamity-ites!
I’m not even sure how or when I stumbled across the first set of Calamity dinner plates, but I knew my quirky heart absolutely needed them in my life. I have since collected and used them (!) for every party I have. My favorite part is setting the table for a large dinner party, and letting the guests decided where they will sit by choosing which crazy plate they want to eat from. I also have mugs, cookie jars, serving platters and bowls…. there is a lot of calamity going on in my cupboards!
So, thank you for the whimsy. There is something so pure about the delight people get when I serve on these dishes.
Have fun with all the sparkle the future holds for you! ~Lisa in Seattle

Although I understand the reasons why this is being done, I will miss you. I will miss a little bitty business, hardly a business at all, that just persevered and kept getting me excellent quality porcelain ware that makes me laugh out loud. I guess I’ll still laugh out loud and I’ll still love the cups I drink my coffee from each morning, my teapot set that I use when I make tea for friends, the napkins that I used to cover the seats of the iron table and chairs in my sunroom (and dab my mouth. I got six.) I will continue to buy things and give Calamitywear as gifts. My only request—please make sure the new guys have the same excellent customer service.

Dear Don, Lynnette, Jack and Nina,

Here’s wishing you a wonderful new chapter in your lives.

I know I speak for many when I say that you showed up and brought something to smile about – in the form or utilitarian art (my favorite kind of art) so that even on the darkest days of winter we could get a little sunshine.

Thank you for Calamity Wear! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
