What’s cookin’ in 2026?

At the end of each year, I write a post here to forecast the projects I hope to complete in the year ahead. My forecasts have proven to be wildly inaccurate. That’s because I have the freedom to procrastinate and shift my priorities at any point. Indeed, that freedom is one of the chief reasons I love my self-inflicted projects.

This year, instead of my usual practice of describing specific products like ramen bowls or mugs, I’m going to focus on some of the drawing themes I hope to spend time on. Get yourself on our email list to ensure you receive news about all new products, projects, or passions.

Here are my best guesses for drawing themes in 2026.

Brain-in-a-vat is a theme that still fascinates me on so many levels. It’s a proven fact that drawing all those pipes, hoses, bezels, gauges, and little chromium switches is highly therapeutic.

********

Dogs are always a good subject for drawings. (Obviously, Don subscribes to the vintage notion that it is funny to see a French bulldog in a French maid’s uniform. So, maybe, lower your expectations.)

********

Patterns are always a fun theme. Cryptids, sea monsters, bugs, and snacks would all make delightful pattern experiments in 2026.

********

Frogs deserve more attention. Big eyes and big feet. What a delight to draw amphibiansdoing anthropomorphic activities.

********

Man-eating plants were part of The Vegeterribles completer set project in 2025. But I think there’s a lot more to explore in this direction. I have a special interest in the intersection of William Morris patterns and feed-me-Seymour vegetation.

********

Dragons are always a good thing to draw. Got to do something dragony in 2026.

********

Creatures making music is a theme I’ve explored before (Dubious Musicians). But it seems to be much deeper and clearly deserves more attention in 2026.

••••••••

You might feel tempted to write and tell me which products you want me to work on. Go ahead. But don’t expect an individual reply and don’t expect me to actually shift my priorities just because you want me to draw raccoons playing badminton, gorillas making waffles, or snakes knitting.

I draw every day. I’m exploring the zone where products are beautiful, utilitarian, and funny. I hope you’ll find something I’m doing worthy of your support. But I plan to keep up the effort, even as my superpowers fade.

Don,
Love the dog, the frog and who can resist a flute-playing possum? From the brilliant recesses of your fabulous (and sometimes warped, maybe?) mind keep giving us such delightful creatures!

Always a fan…Shirley

Lunar New Year stuff every year? Why not Loony New Year? Fire horse is this year’s critter, but I would love to see a special plate for each year. Since I’m a rat (coming again in 2032), I would be delighted to serve treats on a beautiful dish decorated with Don’s rats.

First thank you for all that has come before from your imaginative mind. I have gifted your T-shirts, pins, stickers, magnets, mugs, woven pieces, towels etc to folks of all ages because your appeal is eclectic.
I would love to see dragons, frogs, bug critters, giraffes, 🦒, opossums, minkeys, octopus and sheets. LOVING the keychains!

Bears. We need bears. I will continue asking for bears until I see them on porcelain, or at least on card stock, so honestly, you may as well go ahead and get it over with, right?
I’ll buy anything you make, of course, but I would buy bears themed items extra hard.
Thank you,
cm

Looks like a great year ahead for Calamityware fans! Loved the Man-eating plant theme and where you may take that. The brain in a vat spoke to me since I am always trying to talk myself out of that next piece of cake. Could be a great tee-shirt or apron. Thanks for the ongoing humor to lighten the mood these days.

The brain in a jar always reminds me of the Doctor Who episode with Tom Baker The Brain of Morbius. So much fun!

I say YES to more Frogs‼️. YES to more Creatures Making Music – an entire orchestra, must include the Dubious Musician Monkey‼️. YES to more Dragons‼️. Any one of these 3 collections could go on a platter the same shape as your Dino Platter but slightly larger‼️. Plus… I say YES to more signed, limited-edition COFFEE prints‼️. And, YES to more Creatures calmly Eating Cake or other dessert items as calamities surround them.‼️. The cake eating creatures would make a fabulous set of blue & white salad/dessert plates‼️.
