Description
An active volcano and river of burning lava add excitement to your mealtime and adds new meaning to the term “hot plate.” This traditional blue-willow-inspired design can be found on the sixth porcelain plate in the Calamityware collection.

Designed by Don Moyer and initially launched as his ninth Kickstarter project in 2015.
Dimensions & More Info
  • 10.5” diameter (26.5 cm)
  • Rich blue images on white porcelain.
  • Produced using the in-glaze decoration process. That means the image is slightly melted into the surface like the fine porcelain you see in museums.
  • Remember, all Calamityware plate designs are different—different borders, different images, and sometimes slightly different blues because the plates were fired at different times. They will look good together on your table or wall, but they won't be identical.
  • Made at the award-winning Kristoff porcelain workshop in Poland.
Care
  • Food safe.
  • Microwave safe.
  • Dishwasher safe.
  • Porcelain is both delicate and durable. We think you’ll enjoy Don’s blog about caring for your new treasures.

These porcelain pieces were fired at the Kristoff workshop in Valbrich, Poland, one of the oldest and grandest porcelain workshops in the world. Kristoff began making porcelain in 1831 and its work can be found in museums and in the palaces of royalty. Our porcelain designs are in-glaze, which means slightly melted into the surface of the piece, to ensure a beautiful crisp image for years to come. Photo by Porcelana Krzysztof Sp. z o.o.

The Big Reveal

Calamityware Porcelain is best shared with friends by stealth. These versatile, durable, and beautiful plates enliven any party or dinner. Watch the innocent guest slowly realize that alien invaders, flying monkeys, pirates, giant squids, looming bots or volcanos are erupting beneath their comestibles. The nervous glance at a neighbor’s plate, the knife scratch to reveal the underlying horror, the scurrying human figures fleeing from these catastrophes, the nervous rotation of the plate to discern faces, bots, frogs, demons who surround their supper, silent, sinister, sinuous. I imagine Alfred Hitchcock hosting such a soiree with sanguine serenity.

Calamityware is NOT Disasterware!

To Hugh Brown, who implied that Calamityware was "stealing" from a guy who made Disasterware--you are so wrong. Calamityware is funny, totally imaginary, and completely benign. And made of porcelain. Whereas Disasterware could not be more grim and foreboding, with images of real horrors and horrible people. Who wants Hitler, the Pan Am disaster, the atomic bomb, or a train wreck on their plates? And it's delft.
That's just dreadful. And malignant.
To the Calamityware customer--if you want a chuckle with your food and beverage, go for this cheery stuff. If you want an excuse to climb back in bed and pull the covers over your head in fear, don't.

Love!

My husband and I were married young and never got to do the old tradition of picking out a China dinnerware set. This year is our 30th wedding anniversary and were are so happy to have Calamityware as our choice! Love the quality and colors, brings a smile to our dining adventures!

Funny addition!

The oldsters at my dinner party didn't know how to react to the plates. Those under 65 thought them hilarious.

Joy!

I can remember my excitement as a child, eating at my grannie's and slowly revealing the Willow Pattern under our food. I have loved blue and white china since those days! So...I started with two 20-oz mugs, which we love. Didn't need, obviously - we have enough mugs to start a café! Now we use them every day, as they are our no 1 faves. Then my husband chipped an old plate, one of a pair, (hooray! I mean, oops!) and this was all the excuse I needed to zip over to Calamitywareland and order two new plates! I went for Pirates and Volcano...I think we need more. I may be putting in secret orders every few weeks and see if I get away with that, lol!

Exquisitely made, exceptional quality and JOYOUS design.

Another classic!

I lava this plate! (See what I did there?) This is one of my favorite calamity plates! Volcanoes are bad for everyone, unless you're a black cat.

We love our Calamityware!

We recently ordered our first four plates from Calamityware. We purchased a set of mugs about a year ago and were so thrilled that we promised ourselves a set of plates as well. The designs are so fun, and there are clever little details hidden in the borders. The quality of the porcelain and the printing is beyond reproach. We are officially collectors of Calamityware, and will definitely make another purchase soon.

Love these dishes!

I am building a set, so have put an extensive review on the Flying Monkeys plate item. These are absolutely the best!
