Calamityware Plate 1: Flying Monkeys

$ 42.00

Traditional blue plate updated with a troop of flying monkeys to suit modern appetite for calamity.

Rich blue image on 10.5” (26.5 cm) diameter white porcelain dinner plates. Food safe. Microwave safe. Dishwasher safe. Designed by Don Moyer and produced at the award-winning Kristoff porcelain workshop in Poland using the in-glaze decoration process. That means the image is slightly melted into the surface like the fine porcelain you see in museums.

Remember, all Calamityware plate designs are different—different borders, different images, and sometimes slightly different blues because the plates were fired at different times. They will look good together on your table or wall, but they won't be identical. If you are obsessive about matching, you should order multiple plates of the same design.

Porcelain is both delicate and durable. We think you’ll enjoy Don’s blog about caring for your new treasures.

PERFECT

My Flying Monkey Brigade loves their new dinner dish. They enjoy the scene, and it helps them eat more calmly. They never had a plate with their pictures on it!

Channeling my inner Dorothy

I'm a big Wizard of Oz fan, so was delighted to see the first Calamityware plate featured flying monkeys. It's a fun and quirky tribute to my favorite movie. I was happy to support it on Kickstarter and even happier when it arrived at my door. Thanks, Don.

Perfectly warped wall decor for my dining room

Oh sure, my grandmother had a collection of decorative porcelain plates on her dining room wall, but none of them involved flying monkeys. My husband bought this for me for Christmas last year, and it was the best gift ever. I prompted mounted it to the wall in a place of honor. And now that the U.S. is about to descend into chaos, it's an exciting mealtime reminder that chaos will arrive from above!

FLYING MONKEYS!!! ::shakes fists in air::

The only thing I can say bad about this plate is it started an addicting collection. I need mugs! I need dessert plates! I need bowls! I need a sinking gravy boat!

Stop this insanity!

I joined the Calamity band wagon by backing mugs & Series 2 plates on Kickstarter. I loved the designs on Series 1, but was afraid that I wouldn't be satisfied with the appearance of the plates next to the newer ones. Tonight I received this plate as a birthday gift & L-O-V-E it! I won't have any problem mixing them on the table. I do, however, have a few complaints. Now I'll have to buy the other 3 Series 1 plates. And then I'll need another set of mugs to go with them. And then there's those darn small plates and bowls that Don's planning for next year. I'll need 8 of each instead of 4. OhMyGosh, Don! Stop this insanity! No more designs until I win the lottery!

There's No Place Like Home

I'm a fan of "The Wizard of Oz" - even played The Wizard in my middle school production - but my friend is a super fan! She even dressed up as a Flying Monkey for a local screening last year. When she saw my plate, she threatened to take it home with her! I may just have to order another plate :-)

Genius Flying Monkeys!

Don Moyer designs belong in Museums! These flying Monkeys were my first Calamityware love. All of Don Moyer's patterns are intricate, sharp and unrivaled in originality and whimsy. I've collected almost all of the Calamityware blue plates. I appreciated and studied the original Johnson Brothers Patterns. The Calamityware Series 1 plates are slightly irregular only when they are stacked. You cannot see this irregularity when the plates are on the table. First series is also a little heavier than the Series 2 plates. All Calamityware plates will be appreciated by Blue Willow collectors and blue and white collectors. The Series 2 Kristoff-made porcelain plates are as fun as the first and more in line with the quality of traditional Johnson Brothers plates. The Kristoffs are exactly proportioned and uniform in shape and stack precisely. When Calamityware finds a way to glaze the under bottom rim of these fine plates it will have found perfection. If you have a collector's appreciation for dinnerware, these plates are for you. Unlike vintage dinner plates, these are microwaveable, and are themed for our time so my millennial kids appreciate them too. And the customer service is EXCELLENT.
