What’s cookin’ for 2024?

At the end of each year, I write a post here to forecast the projects I hope to complete in the year ahead. My forecasts have proven to be wildly inaccurate. That’s because I have the freedom to procrastinate and shift my priorities at any point. Indeed, that freedom is one of the reasons I love my self-inflicted projects.

Here are my best guesses for projects in 2024.

********

Bowl

Things-Could-Be-Worse Bowls: It’s time to replace the nearly famous Omnivore Bowl with a new design. I’ve been working on a design that features a calamity landscape wrapped around the inside so you can contemplate potential troubles as you eat your breakfast. I already have a prototype I like, so this could be a Kickstarter project early in the new year.

********

Time machine cat

Cat Collection: I filled several sketchbooks with cat drawings in 2023. Been working on several projects (book, puzzle, cards, textiles, etc.) There’s been talk of making all these one big giant Kickstarter project. The timing could be complicated, but it might make a bigger splash if all the cats arrived simultaneously, right?

********

interior

Letterpress Prints:  I feel that every year should include a few prints. Just need to decide which topics will be best.

 ********

Throw

Throw: I’d love to do another cozy throw blanket this year. I have some delightful and silly patterns that could work. Still think something in dusty sage green could be a hit. Possibilities include sleepy kittens, sea monsters, carnivorous plants, and, the ever popular, cephalopods.

 ********

plate

Dinner Plate(s): Even though we already have 12 dinner plate designs, it seems like there are additional calamities that deserve to be addressed. Wouldn’t it be fun to discover demon mosquitoes (etc.) under your lasagna?

 ********

Krampus

Return of Krampus: I had so much fun with the Krampus cards, coasters, print, and t-shirt this year. Makes me want to revisit Krampus. Perhaps see more of his family life, pets, and hobbies. Wonder what happens in the Krampus kitchen?

********

Cuties

Cuties: If you grew up with siblings, or live with roommates, you know how important it is to protect your snacks from pirates. My answer is the Ghastly Guardians, a band of adorable but vicious characters who can discourage poaching of your treats by the inconsiderate people you live and work with. Perhaps a series of stickers, security containers, tableware, tokens, and scary dolls will remind rapacious marauders to keep their hands off your goodies?

Fuzzy The Merciless is the first of these characters. Fuzzy was introduced on one of the porcelain bowls in the Vexations Series introduced in 2023. But there are many more in my sketchbooks. Maybe this is the year to let them out?

********

Spread

Evil Career Guide. I’ve got a first draft and some excellent sketches I’d still like to turn into a career guide for super villains. But I think I might have had this idea on my bucket list in previous years. Will it finally happen? Probably be easier and result in a better book if I skip the notion of iambic pentameter.

********

That’s not all. I’m sure some other unanticipated projects will jump into the line-up. There has been talk of pillows, towels, butter dishes, gravy boats, coloring books, socks, and much more. Watch for email updates as the year advances.

You might feel tempted to write and tell me which products you want me to work on. Go ahead. But don’t expect an individual reply and don’t expect me to actually shift my priorities just because you want me to draw Martians, warrior Chihuahuas, owls, or opossums wearing poke bonnets.

bonnet

I draw every day. I’m exploring the zone where products are beautiful, utilitarian, and funny. I hope you’ll find something I’m doing worthy of your support. But I plan to keep up the effort, whether anyone is behind me or not.

As a Southerner, I love the giant mosquito idea! I also would love more trolls and their lawyers. Also, a farm series. Imagine spaceships abducting cows, pigs flying, etc. lol. I am a new customer, I just received my first order and I am hooked!!!

Please, a cat throw! ♥

Oh, warrior chihuahuas are essential! Along with an evil career training guide, a must for every chihuahua lover (and hater)!

The beer stein is great — could some Calamitous goblets be added for the wine drinkers among us?

And I would LOVE to be able to buy individual small bowls and plates, rather than them only coming in sets of four.

It looks like I need to remodel my kitchen to create more Calamityware storage space!

I seem to recall talk of baby onesies? Perhaps with “cuties”…Krampus for the holidays? Need something clever before the baby & toddler get too big.

Opossums!!!!! Yay! Yes, please…

Holly McCaddin

I think the cuties would make great chip clips❣️❣️

We would love Calamityware gravy boats and butter dishes (fingers crossed)

Opossums in poke bonnets seem oddly appealing. Or, perhaps you might consider piggies in pokes (bags, not bonnets). Anxious to learn what weird and wonderful characters will make their way into the 2024 lineup.

Love the TCBW bowls. I’m all on (in?) for that. And the cat ideas, all of them. Ignore the “cutesie” warning about cat things. Also, I like the cuties a LOT. I’m all in on the evil career guide, especially since I’m on my third or fourth career and will use all the guidance I can get.

January 01, 2024

I love the idea of Cuties. Especially if they were a figurine that I could move around the house to be evil gaurdians of my things. I’m always looking to add to my Things Could be Worse collection. A butter dish, a soup ladle, cake plate, or even silverware with different calamaties on the handle would be cool.

I’d love a throw with carnivorous plants! And anything with cats….
Happy New Year!

December 31, 2023

Oh wow! I just received the full set of Things Could be Worse dinnerware plates for Xmas. (Much needed and gave me some hopeful perspective since I am pretty negative around this time of year.) I definitely would LOVE a bowl set, and as someone else mentioned, a butter dish would be lovely. Have you considered a Chocolate pot? (As in the tall elegant type carafe, not a fondue pot, although that could work too…). Also, I love the Bonnet Opossum. If you did something with her, perhaps an elegant linen napkin series with some other bonnet buddies.

I love all of these ideas, especially the new bowl design and the cat throw. Whatever you do will be great!

I love so many of your prospective projects and would also like to see some thick, fuzzy slipper socks and warm, thick flannel pj’s. YES to sage green anything!

Julie

December 31, 2023

Love the things could be worse bowls – the whole TCBW series actually! The sage kitten blanket please, and a possum in a poke bonnet pin would look great on my jean jacket by my zombie poodle. (Love the tabby kitties, would you also consider tuxedo cats?)

Lily

December 31, 2023

Do the possum, please!!!! We have a lot of your stuff and gift it as well. We just installed a cat door and unbeknownst to us, a possum had come in and was sleeping in our kitchen hamper during the day and going on walkabout in the house at night! I went to reach into the hamper to wash our “it could be worse” placemats other things and HISS!!!!! A possum sprang out at me like a Jack in the box! I threw the placemats back on top of it, pulled the hamper out, put it in the back of our 4-wheeler, and released the possum at the opposite end of our farm. I wish I could have seen my face, LOL! I’ll never reach into a hamper again without a slight chill and a nervous giggle!

More wonderful Calamities on long-sleeved shirts. Fuzzy sounds marvelous. More plush Calamities! Reach a younger demographic! Keep up the great work warning us of the lurking threats!!! Thank you!

Fingers crossed – any item/s with an opossum in a poke bonnet. My great grandmother’s bonnet is my favorite family “heirloom.” She traveled in a covered wagon, saved her cabin from a prairie fire, battled rattlesnakes with a hoe – my heroine.

Cats? Tread lightly and let B. Kliban be a cautionary example of someone who went from ‘amazing cartoonist’ to ‘guy who cashed in on cats’. Cute is common. Calamity is special.

More letter press – I am addicted – stunning art work and quality. Yes to the omnivore bowls and a vote for a cake stand and a butter dish. How about some US postage stamps?

Mmmm. Demon Mosquitos? I live in South Florida where there are Demon Mosquitos from barely visible to palm-of-hand sized. And I’m allergic to their bite. I’m all for it. Please just don’t forget they have 6 very long thin legs. And are vicious.
Very interested in more Krampus stuff.
And a request, maybe someday. Love the take-off of Blue Willow porcelain. I’m not a blue person. I’m a red person. That means Pink Castles. I’m sure Pink Castles can be found with numerous catastrophes. Thank you for considering it. Happy 2024.

December 29, 2023

I use my Time-Traveling Bloopers throw almost constantly and adore it — nonetheless, the idea of a throw covered in dusty sage green carnivorous plants would send this gardener flying back over to Kickstarter to pledge for it (hey, if you’re going to send us demon mosquitoes in 2024, I want defensive vegetation!).

Cindy

December 29, 2023

Sorry for second comment, but I too would love a cake plate, and I would love to see a soup toureen someday. Maybe even a soup tureen and soup bowls with handles set?

Really hoping that this is the year the butter dish makes it into production. It would be awesome if vigilant dragons or kitchen witches were to protect my butter, it’s currently languishing in a rather sturdy, but ugly, plastic cinnamon bun container.

Boxing Day, I had a spectacular calamity with 4 of the 8 Omnivore Bowls in my collection. They leapt out of my hands whilst being put away in the dish cupboard and crashed to the floor, breaking in to many pieces. Sad, but things could be worse. I was trying to decide if I should purchase 4 more Omnivore Bowls. Now, I can vote for a Kickstarter campaign as a replacement of the bowls: yes, please! With a cat in the middle. Yes to a sage green throw. I am enamored with the two Calamityware throws I already have; another with cats would be great! A cat puzzle would be fun to work. I enjoy the memory cards; maybe a set with cats? I bought a set of permanent color fabric pens for polyester fabrics to add a little color to my SeaMonsters Shower Curtain. Other coloring projects would go over well. Yes, please, for the butter dish. Oh, to heck with it. Just put a project or 6 or 7 on Kickstarter. I will be there to support. PS: received the shallow bowls and plates from the Kickstarter Campaign; just right! Adore Fuzzy the Merciless. More cuties might be nice!

Hilary

December 29, 2023

Of course anything with cats!!! But would definitely love to see the kitten throw and the new bowls with your signature cat at the bottom! Your cats have the best
personalities! They would be the perfect way to ring in the new year.

Hi Don. You don’t know me…I don’t know you. But what I do know that you don’t know is that I am an about to be 50 year old woman, who has grown up money to spend, with children who have left the house. I’m not SAYING I would buy all the things that you make with an opossum in a poke bonnet… but I am HEAVILY implying it. I work a lot and I enjoy putting random crazy things all around our 100 year old house. Opossums are cool man. I dig them. I appreciate just having the cool picture to look at. Happy New Year!

Robert Wellington

December 29, 2023

A guide for wannabee supervillains is a terrible idea! There are so many out there now that I hardly have time to eliminate the competition I already have.

Andrea

December 29, 2023

I LOVE animals, so the opossum in the bonnet is a must!! How about rats? Lots of pet rat peeps on insta. The throw is great.
Hand towels? In a solid color, with a wide ribbon-like (3-5”) strip at one end? Just like the blue & white bowl, with the strip around the white bowl on the hand towel. Happy New Year!

Any new t-shirt designs in the works? My favorites are the mascot cat, the robot slipping on the banana peel and Death on a bicycle.

John Lindner

December 29, 2023

I already have four omnivore bowls, but why not four more, the design is fantastic both inside and out, and with your signature cat at the bottom, I want four more! A butter dish would be welcome, especially if you design a lid for the dish so I can keep a stick on the counter protected at room temperature like the Europeans do. I already have complete place settings for twelve, so I don’t think I’d get more dinnerware sets — that is unless you offer individual plates for sale and some nasty critter on one or another begs me to purchase their plate. Have you consider dining table salt and pepper shakers? Maybe dice shaped with a cutie in each of the four sides and your signature cat on top. I’ll take two sets, please! I have your two previous throws and yet a cat throw in green is mighty tempting…

Cindy Potter

December 29, 2023

Love the opossum! Chihuahuas can be vicious little creatures, so I love that idea. Mainly, I seem to remember a clock prototype and I’ve been lusting for one ever since. I hope that will happen. I think I’ll love whatever you decide to do!

December 29, 2023

I love all of these ideas so very, very much! In particular a butter dish and gravy boat would look SWELL with the rest of my collection. As a self-proclaimed maker of pies…I wouldn’t be mad if you released a pie plate someday! Thank you for bringing so much joy to my kitchen!

December 29, 2023

What about a butter dish and a gravy boat?

Andrea

December 29, 2023

I must have the kitty blanket in sage green. And I must have TCBW bowls. And I must have killer mosquito plates. How about a set of plates that are all different ? I must have more monsters. Why do you torment me so ?

December 29, 2023

Please more jigsaw puzzles. I have the four most recent ones (can’t find the older ones anywhere) and would love to have more of them. The artwork is so unique for puzzles. The majority of jigsaw puzzles in the marketplace are hideous neon colors with really sappy pictures and riddled with depressingly saccharine depictions of artificial renderings of the past. I don’t know how puzzlers can look at them for the hours it takes to work a puzzle. So, your unique, creative and imaginative depictions are a visual relief for the eyes. I’ve worked the Calamityware puzzles multiple times and it has got to the point where I can recognize some of the individual pieces and know where they go. Time for more! Thanks very much.

Bears! Need more BEARS!
We always need more bears. Bears are rare in calamityland but they are highly calamitous and spend lots of time in Southern California swimming pools and kitchens.
And YES on the new bowl!! It looks like a perfect shape for me and my kin.
Thank you for asking, sir!!

December 29, 2023

Socks! And Kitty Throws! I was given (requested) the Time Travel Bloopers throw for Christmas, and I have to tell you it is the best! Great weight, great quality, great size, great color. I would fill my house with your throws, and sage green would look lovely! The Christmas cards I bought were a big hit with friends and family, as well.

Karen

December 29, 2023

A pitcher/jug would be lovely. One does look a tad unstable when pouring gravy and juice out of a teapot…. especially when one has but a single teapot.

And I’d pay an embarrassing amount of money for a large print or poster that was just a big version of the classic calamities postcard.

Judy

December 29, 2023
