Description
A troop of flying monkeys adds drama to mealtime. Imagine these pesky primates behind your penne pasta. This traditional blue-willow-inspired design can be found on the first porcelain plate in the Calamityware collection.

Designed by Don Moyer and initially launched as his first Kickstarter project in 2013.
Dimensions & More Info
  • 10.5” diameter (26.5 cm)
  • Rich blue images on white porcelain.
  • Produced using the in-glaze decoration process. That means the image is slightly melted into the surface like the fine porcelain you see in museums.
  • Remember, all Calamityware plate designs are different—different borders, different images, and sometimes slightly different blues because the plates were fired at different times. They will look good together on your table or wall, but they won't be identical.
  • Made at the award-winning Kristoff porcelain workshop in Poland.
Care
  • Food safe.
  • Microwave safe.
  • Dishwasher safe.
  • Porcelain is both delicate and durable. We think you’ll enjoy Don’s blog about caring for your new treasures.

Where it's made

These porcelain pieces were fired at the Kristoff workshop in Valbrich, Poland, one of the oldest and grandest porcelain workshops in the world. Kristoff began making porcelain in 1831 and its work can be found in museums and in the palaces of royalty. Our porcelain designs are in-glaze, which means slightly melted into the surface of the piece, to ensure a beautiful crisp image for years to come. Photo by Porcelana Krzysztof Sp. z o.o.

Love the designs...but

As both a blue willow plate collector and tech nerd, these plates immediately grabbed my attention. I HAD to have them and I backed them from the first Kickstarter project.

However, the actual plates were disappointing since they are not the same stoneware that blue willow is normally made of and do not "mix & match" with normal blue willow plates. The colors are off too (very white underglaze and different blue). They are also much larger. The patterns are also raised on the plate so you can feel them with your finger, unlike normal blue willow. It all adds up to a completely different feel. They don't mix in at all.

I was so looking forward to mixing these plates in with my regular ones, and seeing the expression on people's faces when they discovered the calamities...but no go, hence the knocked-off star. I would knock off more since this was the main reason I bought them, but that would not be fair since the plates are fine and as promised, just not what I was hoping them to be.

I don't really understand why this was not possible to achieve, since dozens of manufacturers have been making blue willow pattern china for literally hundreds of year now, and their plates can be mixed and matched easily. I'm sure it is too late now, since Don has to keep making them the same way for the people collecting them, but if there is any possibility of adding a second version that is more like real blue willow, I would buy it in a heartbeat.

PERFECT

My Flying Monkey Brigade loves their new dinner dish. They enjoy the scene, and it helps them eat more calmly. They never had a plate with their pictures on it!

Stop this insanity!

I joined the Calamity band wagon by backing mugs & Series 2 plates on Kickstarter. I loved the designs on Series 1, but was afraid that I wouldn't be satisfied with the appearance of the plates next to the newer ones. Tonight I received this plate as a birthday gift & L-O-V-E it! I won't have any problem mixing them on the table. I do, however, have a few complaints. Now I'll have to buy the other 3 Series 1 plates. And then I'll need another set of mugs to go with them. And then there's those darn small plates and bowls that Don's planning for next year. I'll need 8 of each instead of 4. OhMyGosh, Don! Stop this insanity! No more designs until I win the lottery!

Perfectly warped wall decor for my dining room

Oh sure, my grandmother had a collection of decorative porcelain plates on her dining room wall, but none of them involved flying monkeys. My husband bought this for me for Christmas last year, and it was the best gift ever. I prompted mounted it to the wall in a place of honor. And now that the U.S. is about to descend into chaos, it's an exciting mealtime reminder that chaos will arrive from above!

Replacement for a broken one

I was devastated when my husband accidentally broke a couple of my Calamityware plates, so had to go right back and replace them. I love the designs and also love the faces of dinner guests when they discover the pattern isn't as traditional as they assumed. A quality product.

Auntie Em loves it!

I inherited my mother's beloved Blue Willow dishes and use them everyday. When I saw the flying monkeys, I had to have it! It hangs on the wall in my dining room where I can enjoy it and share it with visitors. Beautiful quality. Would love to have a whole set. Maybe someday.

Terrified.

As a young person the Wizard of Oz terrified me. Of all the calamities that befell Dorothy and her crew, the Flying Monkeys made me seek a place of covered shelter. The Flying Monkeys plate doesn't scare me and I thoroughly enjoy their friendly appearance from behind delicious food. Quality of product and the design are tops.
